Educ: Univ. of Hawaii 1936 (medical student); scholarship pupil of Roger Sessions, Princeton Univ. 1937-38; fellowship pupil of Frederick Jacobi, Juilliard Graduate School 1938-41; scholarship pupil of Aaron Copland 1941-42. While studying medicine at Univ. of Hawaii first orchestral composition, Valse Penseroso, was performed by Honolulu Symph. Orch. Gave up medicine for music.
